Mount Baruntse, a splendid climbing mountain lies in the Makalu Barun National Park in the eastern part of Nepal bordering Sagarmatha National Park on the west. Mount Baruntse is in a remote and quiet region of Makalu which is not climbed often as it has a physically demanding approach.

This mountain stands in the middle of the Makalu and Everest region which is surrounded by Barun Glacier to the east, Hunku Glacier to the south, and Imja Glacier to the northwest.

Mount Baruntse was first summited in 1954 via South Ridge by Colin Todd and Geoff Harrow who was part of a New Zealand expedition group led by Sir Edmund Hillary.

Baruntse Expedition in the spring season.

Spring is the most favorable season for climbing Baruntse. The spring season falls in March, April, and May. During the season the weather is warmer both day and night compared to the autumn season. The season also provides a better weather window for the summit. The season is dryer and there are very few chances of snowing where the ice remains compact so it’s good for crampons.

Baruntse Expedition in the autumn season.

The Autumn season is the second most favorable season for the Baruntse expedition. The autumn season falls in the Months of September, October, and November.

During the season the weather is more pleasant during the daytime with the brighter sun whereas the Nights are a little colder and have fewer chances of snow. The morning normally remains clear but in the afternoon clouds start to build up. But this season also provides a good weather window for the summit before the afternoon.

How to get to the trailhead of Baruntse base camp?

There are two main access to Baruntse Base Camp the first is landing at Lukla airport then trekking along the beautiful Hinku valley and lastly over the Mera-La, through the remotest region of SetoPokhari to Baruntse base camp.

The second non-standard access is to fly to Tumlingtar airport and trek towards the Makalu Base Camp and to Baruntse Base Camp.

How much does the Baruntse climbing permit cost?

The permit fees for the Baruntse climbing vary depending on the season of the year. For this, if you are planning to climb during the Spring season (March, April, and May) it costs USD 500 per person.

Likewise, it costs only half USD 250 per person during the Autumn season (September, October, and November); moreover, it is much cheaper if you come to the summit during the summer (June, July, and August) and winter season (December, January, and February) which only cost USD 125 per person.

on this expedition, we also combined the summiting of Mera Peak as part of the preparation for Baruntse climbing which separately cost USD 250 per person.

Besides this, you are required to deposit the amount of USD 500 as part of the “garbage deposit” which is refundable as per the Nepal Mountaineering Association rules.
