Tashi Lapcha Pass Trek is considered one of the most challenging treks in the Nepal Himalayas due to its remoteness, rugged terrain, glacial walk, and technical climb.

The beginning of the trek goes through the relatively quieter region of Rolwaling Valley and to the busiest classic trek region of Everest. Both Rolwaling Valley and Khumbu Valley are considered “Beyul” which means “sacred valley” in the Sherpa language.

Day 1 Arrival in Kathmandu and check in the hotel

Welcome to Kathmandu, capital of Nepal and the gateway to the Himalayas. Upon your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, our representative from Discover Altitude Treks will meet you and transfer you to your hotel. After check-in, you can relax and recover from your journey or explore the surrounding area at your own pace.

Later, our team will provide a briefing about the trek, including the route, high-altitude conditions, required equipment, safety procedures, and final preparations. This is also a good opportunity to meet your guide and trekking team.

Day 2 Cultural & Heritage Exploration in Kathmandu Valley

Today is dedicated to discovering the rich cultural and historical heritage of Kathmandu Valley. Visit some of the valley's most important UNESCO World Heritage Sites and experience the unique blend of Hindu and Buddhist traditions.

After breakfast you're going to exploring Patan Durbar Square, Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple), Boudhanath Stupa, and Pashupatinath Temple. The ancient architecture, courtyards, temples, stupas, and traditional Newari culture provide a fascinating introduction to Nepal before heading into the remote Himalayas.

In the evening, return to the hotel and make final preparations for the trek.

Day 3 Drive to Chetchet early morning from Kathmandu

We begin our journey early in the morning with a scenic drive from Kathmandu toward the Rolwaling Valley. The road follows rivers and winding mountain highways, passing through green hills, terraced farmland, traditional settlements, and spectacular countryside.

As we travel deeper into the region, the landscape becomes increasingly mountainous. After several hours on the road, we reach Chetchet, where we spend the night before beginning our trek the following morning.

The long drive is an important part of the adventure, gradually taking us away from the busy Kathmandu Valley and toward the remote Himalayan wilderness.

Day 4 Trek from Chetchet to Simigaun

Today marks the beginning of our trek into the spectacular Rolwaling Valley. From Chetchet, the trail climbs steadily through lush forests and along the mountainside. You will encounter waterfalls, streams, suspension bridges, and traditional hillside settlements along the way.

The ascent is relatively demanding as we gain altitude, but the changing scenery makes the effort worthwhile. Eventually, we reach Simigaun, a beautiful Sherpa village perched on the mountainside.

Take time to explore the village and enjoy the surrounding mountain views.

Day 5 Trek from Simigaun to Kyalche

After breakfast, we continue deeper into the Rolwaling Valley. The trail passes through dense forests of rhododendron, pine, and other Himalayan vegetation before gradually entering a more rugged mountain environment.

We follow the valley and cross several small streams while enjoying views of the surrounding peaks. The trail continues with a mixture of gradual ascents and undulating sections before reaching Kyalche, a small settlement and resting point along the route.

As we gain altitude, you will begin to notice the landscape becoming increasingly alpine.

Day 6 Trek from Kyalche to Beding

Today, we continue toward Beding, the largest and most important Sherpa settlement in the Rolwaling Valley. The trail gradually climbs through forests and along the Rolwaling River, with the surrounding mountains becoming more dramatic.

As we approach Beding, the valley opens up and spectacular Himalayan peaks begin to dominate the landscape. Beding is an important cultural center of the Rolwaling Sherpa community and provides an excellent opportunity to experience traditional mountain life.

After reaching the village, relax at the lodge and prepare for the higher-altitude sections ahead.

Day 7 Acclimatization Day in Beding

Today is an important acclimatization day. Rather than gaining significant altitude, we spend the day allowing our bodies to adjust to the increasing elevation.

After breakfast, we take a short hike around Beding and the surrounding hills. The hike provides excellent views of the Rolwaling Valley while helping with altitude adaptation. You can also explore the traditional village, interact with local Sherpa people, and learn about their culture and lifestyle.

The rest of the day is spent relaxing, staying hydrated, and preparing for the higher sections of the trek.

Day 8 Trek from Beding to Na Village

We leave Beding and continue farther into the remote upper Rolwaling Valley. The vegetation becomes thinner as we gain altitude, while the surrounding mountains become increasingly rugged and impressive.

The trail follows the Rolwaling River through a spectacular valley surrounded by towering Himalayan peaks. After several hours of trekking, we reach Na Village, the last permanent settlement in the Rolwaling Valley.

Na is a small traditional settlement surrounded by high mountains and is an important stopping point before entering the remote glacial landscape.

The route follows rugged terrain with views of glaciers, moraines, and snow-covered peaks. As we approach the lake, the scenery becomes increasingly dramatic, with the turquoise waters of Tsho Rolpa surrounded by massive mountains.

We camp near the lake and enjoy an unforgettable evening in this remote Himalayan setting.

We leave Tsho Rolpa and enter a more challenging section of the trek. The trail follows the Trakarding Glacier, crossing rocky moraine terrain and steep mountain sections.

The environment is now completely alpine, with little vegetation and an extraordinary panorama of glaciers, ice-covered peaks, and massive rock walls. The trail conditions can be demanding, requiring careful walking and close attention to the guide.

We establish camp at a suitable location near the glacier and spend the evening preparing for the challenging days ahead.

Day 11 Trek to Tashi Lapcha Base Camp

Today, we continue through the remote glacial landscape toward Tashi Lapcha Base Camp 5,000 m (16404feet). The trail involves rocky moraines, glacial terrain, and steep sections as we approach the base of the pass.

The surrounding landscape is spectacular, with views of the Drolambau Glacier and high Himalayan peaks. At this altitude, the pace is intentionally slow, allowing sufficient time for acclimatization and safe movement.

Upon reaching base camp, the team will assess the weather, snow, and route conditions while preparing the technical equipment required for the pass crossing.

Day 12 Contingency & Acclimatization Day

This day is reserved as a contingency day for additional acclimatization, unfavorable weather, route conditions, or other unforeseen circumstances.

If weather and trail conditions are suitable and the team is properly acclimatized, we may continue according to the planned schedule. Otherwise, this additional day allows us to wait safely for better conditions before crossing Tashi Lapcha Pass.

At high altitude, flexibility is essential, and this reserve day significantly improves the safety and success of the expedition.

Day 13 Cross Tashi Lapcha Pass (5,755 m) and Descend to Thengpo

Today is the most challenging and rewarding day of the entire trek. We start early to take advantage of stable morning conditions and begin our ascent toward Tashi Lapcha Pass at 5,755 meters.

The route involves steep, rocky, snowy, and glacial terrain. Depending on current conditions, ropes, crampons, ice axes, and other technical equipment may be required. Our experienced guide and climbing crew will support you throughout the difficult sections.

Reaching the summit of Tashi Lapcha is a remarkable achievement, with spectacular panoramic views across the Rolwaling and Khumbu Himalayas.

After spending some time at the pass, we begin a long and careful descent toward Thengpo, where we set up camp and enjoy a well-earned rest.

The trail passes through traditional Sherpa settlements and offers views of surrounding peaks. Eventually, we arrive at Thame, a historic Sherpa village and the home region of several famous Everest mountaineers.

The trail follows the Dudh Koshi Valley and passes through settlements such as Phakding before continuing toward Lukla. After several hours of walking, we reach Lukla, where we celebrate the completion of our Tashi Lapcha adventure.

Useful Information

Best time to do the Tashi Lapcha trek.

  • The Autumn season which falls from September to November is supposed to be one of the best times to do the Tashi Lapcha trek as during this season sky remains clear, and just before the winter season, and temperate weather walks.
  • The second popular season to do trekking is the spring season which is March to May. During this season it is warmer weather to walk, beautiful trees blossom like rhododendrons and the sky stays clear which is good for mountain viewing.

Hiking essentials for Tashi Lapcha pass

Although it differs in each choice and interests. However, we advise you to bring sufficient and warm clothes fit for much colder weather as mountain weather is always unpredictable especially onwards to Tashi Lapcha pass from Na village.

Duffel bag

You need a duffel bag that is supposed to be waterproof with a strap along with a TSA lock. In your duffel bag, you keep all the clothes and essential gear while trekking. And this will be carried by our porter. Regarding the size, you can choose from 100 liters to 140 liters duffel as this size all you to fit most of the things you need for trekking.

Sleeping bag

It is the most important piece of equipment for trekking and climbing. Normally the smaller and lighter the size, the more expensive it is. Regarding the warmth of sleeping bags, sleeping bags are warmer than synthetic ones. You need to bring a sleeping bag that rates up to -20c and a liner just in case it feels colder.

Daypack bag

It’s a daypack bag that you carry while waking where you put your wallet, camera, water bottle, rain cover, fleece jacket, and windproof jacket. Regarding the size of the daypack bag, the size of a small-medium 30 to 40-liter day bag with some side pockets where you can fit your water bottle or gloves is good. Moreover, if you can fit your Camelbak in your daily carry it is more efficient in the coldest weather as your water doesn't get freeze.

Water bottle

You can bring two water bottles in which you can drink in one and treat water in another to refill again. (Nalgene water bottle is good as you can put hot water as well if you want) you also can bring Camelbak which can be very handy for climbing.

  • Body wipes (it comes in handy where there are no showers)

  • Sunscreens (minimum of SPF 40 plus as in higher altitude sunlight are direct and more penetrating.
  • Earplugs (it is handy stuff as most guest house rooms are separated by plywood. So, sometimes your next-room trekkers might be noisy talkers or snores.
  • Mobile phone (you can use it as an alarm or there are internet services in most of the guesthouses so, you can use it if you want to communicate especially in the Everest region after the pass)
  • Diary
  • Chargers with an adapter (you can charge your gadgets along the trail, especially on the other side of the Tashi Lapcha)
