Upper Mustang is located to the north of the famous Pokhara city in the upper region of Mustang District which is about 50 kilometers from the district headquarters of Jomsom. The Upper Mustang region once was the kingdom of “Lo” which was established by “Ami Pal “a Warrior who came from western Tibet in the 1380s of which Lo-Manthang was the capital city.

The Upper Mustang trek goes along the ancient trade route between Indian sub-continent countries to Tibet which was widely used during the 15th to 17th century for Barter trading, especially salt. The Upper Mustang region falls in Nepal’s remote rain shadow area which is surrounded by Tibet on three sides- east, west, and north.

The Lo-Manthang remained as a kingdom of its own until Nepal was united by Prithivi Narayan Shah in the 17th century however, Nepal continued to provide special designation as the kingdom of its own until Nepal was declared a republic in 2008.

The upper Mustang trek is filled with ancient caves, grand canyons, Himalayan vistas, ancient villages, and monasteries with rugged mountain views throughout the journey.

During the upper Mustang trekking, you can experience pure Tibetan Buddhist culture virtually unchanged since the 14th century wherein most of the town is abounding with ancient monasteries, Chortens, and Mani-walls which are all intact like in the past.

Lo-Manthang is also well known as “Little Tibet” or “Mud-city” where inside, you can observe the mud-made Buddhist monuments, monasteries, local houses, and Palace with fine medieval Tibetan architecture which stands as testimony to Lo-Manthang’s prosperity and rich cultural heritage.

Besides that, you also get to visit the local “Amchi School” where they learn and teach the traditional herbal medicine recipes to cure different diseases.

During the trekking to Upper Mustang, we can detour to Jhong which has abundant caves scattered in the region which bear testimony of prehistoric settlers and the ancient monasteries which will certainly provoke your curiosity about art and its connection to their cultures.

Upper Mustang remained a forbidden region for foreigners as it was only opened to tourists in 1992. However, the area is still subject to acquiring special trekking permits to limit the number of tourists.

Useful Information

What is the accommodation and food during the Upper Mustang Trek?

Once the Upper Mustang trek was only possible to go camping and being sufficient with all the supplies we needed but when it became accessible with the motorable roads they started to build lodges and hotels so, now we can stay in the lodges along with the main villages to Upper Mustang. the lodges are basic in which a room comes with two beds and bedding but for the toilet mostly you have to use the communal one.

Regarding the food during the trek to Upper Mustang, every lodge serves food which are pretty basic menus you can have like, rice, potatoes, noodle, and some kinds of pasta or even soups but you won't find any fancy food like in restaurant in cities. Besides that, they also serve hot drinks and cold drinks as per demand.

How difficult is the Upper Mustang trek?

The Upper Mustang is categorized as a moderate trek in Nepal as this trek doesn't go higher like other treks in Nepal. Although it consists of some uphill and downhill climbs however this is suitable for any age group.

A bit of physical fitness and eagerness to explore trans-Himalayan terrain is more than enough to be in the Upper Mustang area, making it a doable trek for any layman.

This Upper Mustang trek can be done throughout the year because the area lies in the rain shadow zone of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri Himalayan ranges, making the area almost a rain-free zone.

List of trekking gear that you need to bring for Upper Mustang Trekking.

Although it differs in each choice and interests. However, we advise you to bring sufficient warm clothes fit for much colder and windy weather as mountain weather is always unpredictable.

for a reminder, you can buy all this gear in Kathmandu as well.

Duffel bag

You need a duffel bag that is supposed to be waterproof with a strap along with a TSA lock. In your duffel bag, you keep all the clothes and essential gear while trekking. And this will be carried by our porter. Regarding the size, you can choose from 100 liters to 140 liters duffel as this size all you to fit most of the things you need for trekking.

Sleeping bag

It is the most important piece of equipment for trekking and climbing. Normally the smaller and lighter the size, the more expensive it is. Regarding the warmth of sleeping bags, sleeping bags are warmer than synthetic ones. You need to bring a sleeping bag that rates up to -15c and a liner just in case it feels colder.

Daypack bag

It’s a daypack bag that you carry while waking where you put your wallet, camera, water bottle, fleece jacket, and windproof jacket. Regarding the size of the daypack bag, the size of a small-medium 30 to 40-liter day bag with some side pockets where you can fit your water bottle or gloves is good. Moreover, if you can fit your Camelbak in your daily carry it is more efficient for drinking water without taking off the bag.

Water bottle

You can bring two water bottles in which you can drink in one and treat water in another to refill again. (Nalgene water bottle is good as you can put hot water as well if you want) you also can bring Camelbak which can be very handy.

Upper body

  • Short sleeve synthetic t-shirts*3(while trekking you sweat a lot so, synthetic t-shirts are best to bring as they are light and dry fast)
  • Wind shirts*1
  • Long sleeve Merino wool t-shirts*2
  • Synthetic insulated jacket
  • Fleece glove
  • Insulated gloves
  • Buff (trail gets very dusty with trekkers and animals passing by you so, you can use it as a mask)

  • Fast drying-camp towel (a towel for a shower so it's good to have one)
  • Toilet papers
  • Lip balm
  • Sunscreens (minimum of SPF 40 plus as in higher altitude sunlight are direct and more penetrating.
