Annapurna Circuit Trek or Round Annapurna Trek is one of the most popular trekking routes in Nepal, listed by Lonely Planet as one the top 10 trekking routes of the world Annapurna Trek is still the most demanding trail in Nepal.

It is a trail to one of the mysterious Annapurna regions of Nepal where trekkers can explore the scenic view of the Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and Manaslu range of the Himalayas together with varied nature and culture.

It is a conserved area called The Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP). The unique biodiversity, the beautiful mountains, the beautiful scenery, and the unique multi-ethnic and multi-culture diversity of the people residing in the area make the Annapurna Region the world’s most popular destination with thousands of visitors every year around the globe.

The Annapurna region is filled with lush green valleys and amazing crop terraces. There is an ancient road that leads to a beautiful old village full of old and exotic traditions. The road will also lead one to the areas to explore, such as caves, and temples, or to a place of spiritual fulfillment with numerous monasteries.

From the Himalayas stretching into the region to the deep blue lakes and the largest pass in the world Thorong La Pass (5416m), Annapurna has everything a traveler would want to see or experience in a trek.

The trail starts with a decent climb uphill till Yak Kharka but from Yak Kharka till Thorong La Pass the trail will be considered difficult until we descend from the Thorung La Pass.

Situated in central Nepal, Annapurna has a lot of variety in its land, people, and traditions. With the 10th highest mountain range in the region, Annapurna is the most liked area for trekking and is referred to as the No. 1 trekking trail according to a survey by Modern Maturity.

There is an abundance of flora and fauna to see, as the region is home to Musk Deer, Brown Bears, Blue Sheep, Barking Deer, Cat Leopards, Pheasants, Ravens, Mountain Eagles, and many more.

Annapurna Region Trek mainly starts from the Pokhara, the city of lakes, or from Besisahar but for the round Annapurna, the trek mainly starts from Besisahar.

This trek leads to Jomsom, Annapurna Base Camp, Fishtail Base Camp, Upper Mustang (the last forbidden kingdom) Thorong Pass, Tilicho Lake (4949m) the only lake at the highest altitude, Manang, and around the Annapurna circuit crossing the highest point at Thorong La Pass at 5416 meters above sea level.

While trekking to the Annapurna Base Camp, Fishtail Base Camp, and Poonhill trek, you will be passing the largest forest of Rhododendron (national flower of Nepal), with the sound of chirping birds, Lophophorus (national bird), peacock, deer, monkey, leopard, etc.

This Trek makes you see Mt. Annapurna (8019m), the world’s 10th tallest peak, Manaslu, Annapurna II, III, and IV, Dhaulagiri, Machhapuchari, and many more. In between the mountain lies the Kaligandaki Gorge, the deepest in the world.

The trek also passes Muktinath (3800m), a pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Buddhists. So, all this leads Annapurna to be one of the diverse trails of Nepal, with uncountable choices of your interest.

The Annapurna Circuit Trek, a trail into the Annapurna region is one of the most popular trekkers' choices in Nepal after Everest Base Camp Trek.

The trail goes around the Annapurna region with the majestic view of two 8000 meters above the Himalayas which includes Mt. Annapurna (8019m) and Mt. Manaslu (8153m) and numerous other Himalayas.

Apart from the Himalayas, the Annapurna Circuit Trail is popular for its diversification of nature and culture. Throughout the trail, different ethnic settlements from a lower altitude to a higher altitude can be observed taking us from 823 meters to 5,416 meters.

Throughout the trail, we pass by rural villages, farmland, snow-melted rivers, waterfalls, hydropower projects, hot springs, temples, monasteries, hills, and the Himalayas.

This trail is also popular for the highest pass on earth which is Thorung La Pass (5,416m), Tilicho Lake (4,949m), and the holy temple Muktinath, a temple for salvation.

Moreover, the Annapurna Circuit Trek can be diverted into different trekking areas of the Annapurna region by adding some more extra days or can shorten the trek through local transportation where applicable, all this depends upon trekkers’ choice and interest. Further, if you are restricted with time, Short Annapurna Circuit Trek might be good enough to do.

Annapurna Circuit Trek Difficulty

walking to the highest point of Thorung La pass.

Annapurna Circuit Trek is an easy-going but moderately difficult trek, it is blessed with the vintage of nature and culture, but for Manang, the trail will be moderately difficult until we reach Muktinath, which is a 3-day trial from Manang to Muktinath.

Starting from Beshisahar (823M) until we reach Manang (3540M), the trail seems easy but with an inclined climb through the village, farmland, etc. From Manang, the trail to Muktinath passes by rocky, steep, or slippery but during the winter it will be filled with snow until Muktinath.

This is all due to high altitude, which makes our body get tired due to low levels of oxygen above 3500 meters.

Apart from all these, Annapurna Circuit Trail also includes lots of stairways both for ascending and descending which can add some more difficulties, however, the trail is smooth and well maintained as compared to other regions of Nepal.

Best Time of the Year to do the Annapurna Circuit Trek

Annapurna Circuit Trek can be accomplished throughout the year, however, the trail starts from Beshisahar (823M) and ends at Pokhara (850M), these are regarded as lower altitudes in Nepal.

During monsoon, this lower altitude receives a sufficient amount of rainfall. Sometimes blocking the trail due to landslides as well. However, the highest altitude during the Annapurna Circuit Trek is Thorung La Pass (5416M). At such an altitude we don't experience rainfall but till Manang, we do have rainfall.

So, if you want your Annapurna Circuit Trek to be memorable without any rainfall or snowfall (very little) and with a majestic view of the Himalayas, the best time of the month for Annapurna Circuit Trek will be February, March, April, and September, October and November.

December and January are extreme winters in Nepal, so you will have snowfall at the higher altitudes but safe enough to trek. Sometimes, in Thorung La Pass you might experience more snowfall. So, avoid the month of May, June, July, and August for Annapurna Circuit Trek, if you don't want to wear a rain jacket during the trek.

What are the Permits Required for Annapurna Circuit Trek

Annapurna Circuit Trek falls under the area of Annapurna Region, this is a vast region bordering Tibet and divided into different areas. So, permits to the Annapurna region vary according to the areas.

However, for the Annapurna Circuit Trekking Trail, trekkers need to have two different permits: Annapurna Conservation Area Permits (ACAP) and Trekkers' Information Management System (TIMS) Permits.

Annapurna Conservation Area Permits (ACAP) cost Rs 3000 and can be obtained in Kathmandu or Pokhara. This permit applies to all the regions of Annapurna only.

Further, another permit for Annapurna Circuit Trek is the Trekkers' Information Management System (TIMS) Permit. These permits cost USD 20 and can be obtained in Kathmandu and Pokhara (only through a registered Trekking Agency) and apply to all the trekking regions of Nepal.

If this Itinerary looks longer for you, follow the SHORT ANNAPRUNA CIRCUIT TREK just a 6-Day Trek.

Useful Information

Annapurna Circuit Trek Route

Annapurna Circuit Trek, a popular trekking destination for adventure lovers is a pleasant walk around the Annapurna region with the majestic views of Mt. Annapurna (8091M), Mt.Dhaulagiri(8167M), and Mt. Manaslu (8153M) above 8000 meters mountain and numerous other Himalayas.

The trail to Annapurna Circuit is an easy walk within the well-maintained trail, frequently maintained by the state government, local government, and Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) with the help of locals.

Starting the hike from Beshisahar of Lamjung district which is a somewhat 6-7 hours drive from the main city Kathmandu, the trek then starts hiking through villages, farmland, rivers, hydropower project, etc into the woods of Annapurna region. As we hike uphill we can explore the Himalayas at their closest.

Until Manang (3540M) we can experience the driveable road, which is also the commercial centre of the Annapurna region but the hiking trail is off the road through the village but frequently passes by the road.

As we pass by Manang, we won’t be able to experience any road for transportation but the hiking trail is worth praising. From Yak Kharka (4018M) the trail will be a bit difficult due to its altitude as during winter we can experience heavy snowfall and strong wind in the dry season due to almost no vegetation.

Spending a night in Thorung Phedi or High Camp (4925M), we start early in the morning towards Thorung La Pass (5416M) and then towards Muktinath (3800M) the very same day, this early morning hike is to avoid strong wind while crossing the Thorung La Pass which is also the highest pass in the world.

Crossing the pass we descend towards Muktinath, one of the holy pilgrimage sites for both Hindu and Buddhist followers. From Muktinath to Jomsom there is a well-paved pitched road and the hiking trail will be almost through the same road.

Can also use a bus or jeep to descend towards Jomsom or Pokhara through Beni, as for Annapurna Circuit Trek there are multiple existing points which are determined by sole trekkers' interest, time-frame, and budget.

Travellers can exit through Beni, Naya Pul, Kade, or Fedi adding a couple of days extra to their itinerary, this will be through a hiking trail, or can fly from Jomsom to Pokhara.

Annapurna Circuit Trek Accommodation

The popularity of Annapurna Circuit Trek has reached far beyond the horizon through different mediums and now the flow of trekkers is increasing day by day.

This has a positive impact on the locals of the Annapurna region as well, now they are busy increasing their income through tourism both local and international.

To maintain the interest of the travellers, local and state governments are playing a vital role in maintaining the standard of the hotels, tea houses,s, and lodges.

Now, throughout the Annapurna Circuit Trek, there are numerous lodges and hotels with attached bathrooms as well. Everywhere electricity is accessible both hydro and solar along with hot shower facilities.

These facilities have created a positive impact on travellers, they can now select their hotel standard, and sleeping a night in the dining hall has become a myth in the Annapurna Circuit trail which used to be very common some decades ago.

Annapurna Circuit Trek Food and Water

Annapurna Circuit Trek is a popular destination for challenging trekkers, it is one of the most desired treks as well according to a popular travel magazine.

Due to its popularity and scenic view every year, thousands of trekkers follow the Annapurna Circuit Trail. As the Annapurna region is a popular trekking destination, alternative trekking routes are abundant as well.

All of these make the Annapurna region a trekker's best choice, thus providing sufficient service to the trekker's local government and Annapurna Conservation Area Project jointly conduct training to local hotels, lodges, and tea house operators about cooking training and maintaining the standard. This training is done every year and also is conducted upon request.

All this training helps local hotel and restaurant operator to understand the basic necessity of cooking and also help them to maintain the hygienic standard of the food they cook.

This makes them prepare all the cuisine ranging from Indian, Chinese, Nepalese, Continental, Italian, etc. above all to say the food is hygienic all around the Annapurna Circuit Trek.

Apart from food, the Annapurna region is blessed with an abundance of water, mainly snow-melted water can be found 24 hours throughout the trail mainly through the tap. But for trekkers, water should be treated, as they are not used to with natural flow of direct water.

Buying mineral bottled water may cost higher depending upon the altitude, so to avoid the high price of bottled water, Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) has established a water treatment plant in almost all the camping sites on the trail and they supply them to the lodges, hotels, tea houses, and restaurants.

This water is safe for drinking and is only served through the refilling process, to avoid the waste bottle on the trekking trail but is provided at a nominal price which is affordable and costs around 1-2 dollars per bottle depending upon the altitude.
