Manaslu Circuit trek in Nepal is one of the most popular restricted off-the-beaten-path adventure journey that is excellent for trekkers seeking an authentic Himalayan experience. It is a perfect alternative to the busy Everest Base Camp and Annapurna Circuit treks.

The Manaslu Circuit trek offers incredible landscapes, rich Tibetan Buddhist cultural heritage, jaw-dropping mountain vistas, and a peaceful journey. Traversing varying terrain and altitude, you will reach Manaslu Base Camp, the lap of the 8th-tallest mountain in the world.

The trail ascends above the Budhi Gandaki River Valley, crossing several suspension bridges, waterfalls & rhododendron forests. You will witness majestic views of Mount Manaslu and many other Himalayan mountains on the way.

The Nubri community is one of the unique highlights of the Manaslu Circuit trek. You will meet with this community only on this trek. They live between Ghap and Sama Gaon villages. They have their own Nubri language, which is still being studied in foreign universities.

The trail navigates landslide and rockfall areas. Once you ascend above the tree line, you will explore alpine pastures and climb to Larkya La Pass. Larkya La Pass is the toughest part of the Manaslu Circuit trek.

Apart from adventure, a stopover in mountain villages allows you to experience local lifestyle and culture. As not many travelers do the Manaslu Circuit trek, the trail is not commercialized.

So, today it has become one of the very few untouched, raw trekking routes in Nepal where only a few trekkers visit. If you want to dare yourself to push your limits and conquer a true remote wilderness challenge, the Manaslu Circuit trek is best for you.

Some hidden gems of this trek are centuries-old monasteries and stupas, the hidden Tsum Valley, ancient trade routes, and stunning alpine lakes such as Birendra Lake.

The restricted areas mostly have off-the-beaten-trails. Likewise, to trek in the Manaslu region or any restricted area, you have to obtain a special restricted area permit and follow some strict rules such as:

Restricted area permits for the Manaslu Circuit trek:

  • Manaslu RAP (Manaslu Restricted Area Permit)

Manaslu Circuit trek tips

We, Discover Altitude, have been organizing the Manaslu Circuit trek for numerous years. We have led hundreds of trekkers over the years. So, we exactly know how to make the most out of the trek, little things that enhance the journey, and hidden trail secrets.

Below, we have listed some of the tips, and the rest we will share with you when you trek with us:

  • If you are on a short vacation, consider starting the Manaslu Circuit trek from Jagat instead of Machha Khola. Recently, new roads have been built up to Jagat village. By starting the trek from Jagat, you skip around 22 km of hiking between Maccha Khola and Jagat and save one full day. However, the drive from Kathmandu to Jagat village gets quite long. So, you have to adjust between these two options.
  • Hydration and ascending slowly is key to traveling without suffering from altitude sickness in the Himalayas. Make sure the itinerary you follow suits your fitness, health, and overall condition. Do not push unnecessarily.
  • Sleeping bag, water bladder, day pack with nice waist support, compression socks, insect repellent, toilet paper, hand sanitizer, high-quality moisturizer, SPF, and electrolytes are some of the things that you must carry with you during the Manaslu Circuit trek.
  • You may come across yaks, mules, and porters carrying heavy loads on the way. Let them pass first and stand on the cliffside while they cross you. Do not disturb them.
  • On the Manaslu Circuit trail, you will cross many stupas, chortens, mani walls, and other religious sites. It is okay to look at them closely, but do not touch them without asking your guide. Be respectful to local culture and people.
  • There are many side quests and hidden landmarks on the Manaslu Circuit. So, make sure you trek with a guide who can help you explore hidden places while trekking.
  • The Manaslu Circuit trek is not as bustling as the EBC or Annapurna trails. So, even in peak seasons, the teahouses and trails can be empty. If you get easily bored without other company, pack some easy-to-carry games or books for time pass. Some trekkers also like to paint.

Charging, a hot shower, internet, and a toilet during the Manaslu Circuit Trek

Note that all the services mentioned below cost extra money, and our Manaslu Circuit trek Package does not cover these expenses. So, we recommend that trekkers budget daily personal expenses for the trek.

  • Charging: The charging cost is usually USD 1 to USD 3 per device. There are separate charging stations in the tea houses where trekkers charge their devices. Spare batteries, solar chargers, and power banks will be convenient.
  • Hot shower: Water is always cold in the mountains. The tea houses offer warm water free of cost to wash your face, but for the shower, you need lots of water, which costs extra money. The hot shower may cost USD 5 to USD 7. Taking a hot shower at a higher altitude is not easy because of the cold climate. It is best if you pack wet wipes to keep yourself refreshed when you can't take a shower.
  • Internet: WiFi is available at lower elevations. You may get WiFi in Namrung and Sama Gaon, but the network will not be stable. Likewise, there is no mobile network in most parts of the Manaslu Circuit trek route. Therefore, we recommend trekkers take this trek as a break from the digital world. WiFi also costs around USD 3 to USD 5.
  • Toilet: Western-style toilets are not available on the trail. You also have to use squat toilets. Prepare yourself mentally for that. Pack toilet paper, soap, hand sanitizer, etc.

Is the Manaslu Circuit Trek suitable for you?

The Manaslu Circuit trek is not as easy as the standard treks in Nepal. It is an advanced trek, ideal for trekkers who have previous trekking expertise and good fitness.

With that being said, beginner trekkers may go for the Manaslu Circuit trek if they are confident in their fitness and can push themselves. So, fitness is the first thing anyone planning to do the Manaslu Circuit trek should consider.

The next factor to consider is the limited infrastructure. Unlike the Everest and Annapurna regions, the services and infrastructure are very limited on the Manaslu Circuit.

You will find comfortable teahouses to spend nights up to Namrung, but after this point, the services and options are very limited. So, ask yourself a question: are you mentally ready to adjust to a simple mountain lifestyle?

How to Prepare for the Manaslu Trek?

First and foremost, you have to take care of your physical fitness for the Manaslu Circuit trek. As the Manaslu Circuit trek involves daily 6 hours of walking minimum, it is important that you are ready for that.

Weight training: Walking long hours on rugged terrain with a backpack demands strength. By weight training, you will strengthen your core, back, and leg muscles, which will help you a lot during the trek.

Cardiovascular exercises: Regular swimming, cycling, running, jogging, etc, will help you improve your stamina and endurance. It will also mentally push your mind.

Mental training: With the rise in elevation, walking becomes tougher due to low oxygen levels and high air pressure. You will be pushing yourself mentally a lot. We recommend practicing long breathing and meditation, etc. These two activities will keep you grounded during nervous breakdowns and over-excitement.

Learn about the region: Manaslu is not well-studied like Everest and Annapurna. Therefore, the infrastructure is very basic, and you have to adjust a lot.

We have two acclimatization days in our Manaslu Circuit trek itinerary. You will spend the first acclimatization day in Sama Gaon.

*Note: We will only hike to Manaslu Base Camp if there is no ice on the route.

As you ascend from Sama Gaon to Samdo, you are in a high mountain zone. The landscapes are much more rugged and barren. The mountains and glaciers are much more obvious.

There is no settlement on the way from Sama Gaon to Samdo. You will enjoy peaceful alpine meadows and a few huts here and there.

Likewise, you will also cross a suspension bridge just before the final uphill walk to Samdo. The hike will be short, so you will almost have a full day in Samdo to rest and recover.

The view of the Manaslu range from this village is incredible. Watch the daily lives of the locals and get to know them closely. Many villagers are Tibetan refugees in this village.

On this day, you will hike to the base of Larkya La Pass. It is also a short hiking day. Larke Phedi is the last settlement before Larkya La Pass.

Technically, it is not even a settlement but rather just a resting point for trekkers before crossing Larkya La Pass. There are only three tea houses here, and trekkers have to spend the night in dormitory-style rooms.

On the way to Larke Phedi, you will cross a thrilling wooden bridge on the Budhi Gandaki River and hike for around 500 meters.

The view of Larkya Glacier is superb along the trail. Some trekkers like to go on a side hike to Khaki Danda.

Day 11 Big day, Larkya La Pass (5,106 meters / 16,752 feet), and descend to Bimthang (3,720 meters / 12,204 feet) 10 hrs

Today is the most challenging day of the Manaslu Circuit trek. You will cross the Larkya La Pass on this day. After a few days of short hiking, you will have quite a long walking day today.

You will leave Larke Phedi at around 4:30 and start hiking to the top of the Larkya La Pass with a torchlight. Crossing a moraine, you will descend to a small lake.

From here, you will follow a steep, rocky, unclear trail that will cross the south, steep grassy slope. You will walk to the edge of the moraine and descend from here to four frozen lakes.

The views are heavenly. From here, the trail steeply ascends to the top of the Larkya La Pass.

Larkey La pass

The top of the pass offers stunning sunrises and outstanding views of mountains like Annapurna II, Himlung Himal, Kang Guru, Manaslu, etc. Enjoy the views and descend from the pass and cross a moraine.

You will then follow a downhill route via a grassy moraine to a small meadow. As you hike further down, the valley starts to widen and leads you to Bimthang.

Equipment List

Along with physical, mental, and document preparation, you also have to pay attention to trekking gear and essentials you pack for the journey. Carrying the right gear is important for a safe and pleasant trekking experience.

We have shared everything you will need for the Everest Base Camp trek below. If your itinerary includes city tours, definitely pack a few pairs of casual clothes along with comfortable hiking shoes.

Similarly, swimsuits and gym wear are a couple of other things that you can pack just in case you get a chance to use a swimming pool, hot spring, or gym in your hotels.

Additional items for winter trekking

December to February is the coldest time of the year in the Himalayas. In most trekking regions, upper routes see heavy snowfall. The temperature drops significantly. To trek comfortably in winter, you have to add the following things to your trekking kit:

  • Heavier/warm thermal base-layer top (1)
  • Thermal base-layer bottom (1–2)
  • Extra fleece/warm mid-layer (1)
  • Insulated/down trekking pants (1 pair)
  • Heavyweight/waterproof winter gloves or mittens (1 pair)
  • Glove liners (1 pair)
  • Balaclava (1)
  • Neck warmer (1)
  • Gaiters (1 pair)
  • Microspikes/traction cleats (1 pair, depending on route and conditions)
  • Hand warmers (1–2 packs)
  • Foot warmers (1–2 packs, optional)
  • Hot-water bottle (1)
  • Warmer-rated sleeping bag (1, if your existing bag is insufficient for the cold weather)
  • Sleeping mat with suitable insulation (1, for camping treks)
  • Ski/snow goggles (1, for snowy/high-altitude routes)
  • Extra batteries/power bank protection for cold conditions (as needed)
  • Warm pajamas (1-2 pairs, optional)
  • Extra moisturizer (the dry air can cause cracked skin)

Additional items for summer/monsoon trekking

June to August is the summer/monsoon period in Nepal. Heavy rainfall usually starts around mid-July and can last till late August. In September, there is occasional rainfall till the second/third week of the month.

To trek during the rainy season, you need extra gear to protect yourself and your stuff from getting wet. You'll also need rain gear to walk safely on muddy/slippery trails.

  • Lightweight rain poncho (1)
  • Rain pants (1 pair)
  • Waterproof backpack liner (1)
  • Extra dry bags (1–2)
  • Waterproof phone pouch (1)
  • Quick-drying extra T-shirt (1–2)
  • Extra quick-drying trekking socks (3-4 pairs)
  • Gaiters (1 pair)
  • Anti-leech socks (2-3 pairs, for routes where leeches are common)
  • Small umbrella (1, optional)
  • Laundry soap/sheets (1 small pack)
  • Lightweight clothesline (1)
  • Extra zip-lock/waterproof bags (several)
  • Small microfiber cloth for drying wet gear (1)]
  • Anti-fungal foot powder (optional)

Helpful packing tips for the trek in Nepal

Smart, accurate packing is important for the trek. We have already shared all the things that you will need while trekking in Nepal. Below, we have shared packing tips that will make a huge difference to your trek experience:

➤ Buying and renting trekking gear in Kathmandu: Kathmandu is where the majority of travelers arrive for trekking in Nepal. In Kathmandu, you can find all trekking essentials at the best rate and best quality. Rental service is also available for trekking gear. You can get sleeping bags, daypacks, trekking poles, down jackets, and many more at a very reasonable price.

➤ Pack according to your trek: A short, comparatively low-altitude trek requires fewer things than advanced, high-altitude treks. So, tweak your gear kit depending on the trek route you have picked. We will help you with it.

➤ Layer clothes: In the mountains, wear clothes in layers, starting from a comfortable base layer, fleece, down jacket, and windproof outer layer. By layering clothes, you can adjust as per changing mountain temperatures.

➤ Broken-in trekking shoes: You do not understand how big a difference there is between a brand-new pair of trekking shoes and already broken-in trekking shoes. Please make sure you are already used to your trekking boots. Buy them early and wear them before the trek begins.

➤ Keep your luggage light: Do not pack unnecessary things. You have a 9 kg weight limit for the duffel bag and 5 kg for the daypack. So, definitely choose everything carefully. At the same time, pack a couple of extra pairs of socks, t-shirts, and undergarments.

➤ Keep your essentials in your daypack: The daypack is carried by the trekkers. Pack your documents, money, water bottle, snacks, SPF, first aid kit, camera, sunglasses, and other things that you may need while walking in the daypack.

➤ Take sun protection seriously: The higher you ascend, the stronger the sun's rays will become. If you want to avoid tanning and sunburns, we recommend using good SPF and reapplying it throughout the day on all exposed body parts.

➤ Dry skin: The higher you ascend, the colder and drier the climate gets. Your skin will suffer. So, get a nice moisturizer and use it regularly.

➤ Keep electronics protected: Keep your phones, camera, spare batteries, cables, chargers, etc, in a waterproof pouch.

➤ Toiletries: Pack travel-size toiletries including basics like toilet paper, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, comb, shampoo, etc. It is best not to rely on the houses for these things.

➤ Keep some emergency funds aside: You never know what additional expenses you may come across. So, make sure to have some additional funds for emergencies.

➤ Use packing cubes: To organize your duffel bags and daypacks, use packing cubes. It will be easier to pack and find things.

➤ Daypack: Make sure your daypack has a nice waist support band.

During late autumn, winter, or early spring, the trail near Larkya La Pass can become icy or snowy. Microspikes are highly recommended for extra safety and stability while crossing the pass.

Respect Local Culture

The Manaslu region is heavily influenced by Tibetan Buddhist culture. Please respect local traditions, monasteries, prayer flags, mani walls, and local customs. Dress modestly and always walk clockwise around religious monuments.

Drone Restrictions

Flying drones without speical permission in the Manaslu region is illegal, for photography, videography, movie or documentary work required a special government permit. In many restricted areas, drones are not allowed without prior approval.

Dharamshala Accommodation & No Electricity & Internet

Before crossing Larkya La Pass, trekkers usually stay overnight at Dharamshala (Larkya Phedi). Accommodation here is very basic due to the remote high-altitude location.

In Dharmasala and around there are not mobile network (signal), Wi-Fi & electricity. You may lost contact with family and loved ones these one day, please let them know about it and prepare yourself for it.

Follow Your Guide

Always listen to your trekking guide, especially at high altitude. Weather conditions and trail situations can change quickly in the mountains.

Stay Hydrated

Drink at least 3 liters of water daily during the trek to help reduce the risk of altitude sickness and dehydration.

Consider Diamox

If you are unsure about your altitude fitness or are sensitive to high altitude, consult your doctor about taking Diamox for altitude prevention before the trek. You can buy Diamox in Kathmandu.

Choose a Professional Guide

The Manaslu region is a restricted trekking area where licensed guides are mandatory. A professional guide improves safety, navigation, cultural understanding, and overall trekking experience.

Trek with a Reputed Company

Choosing a reliable and experienced trekking company ensures proper permits, trained staff, safety management, quality service, and emergency support throughout the trek.

Manaslu Circuit Trek Difficulty and Challenges

The restricted trekking zones are more challenging than other trekking areas in Nepal, and Manaslu is one of the restricted areas. The adventure and spectacular scenery of Manaslu come with a demanding walk across varying altitudes and climatic zones.

The difficulty of the Manaslu Circuit Trek may differ from person to person. For example, a well-experienced trekker with good fitness will find the challenges of the Manaslu Circuit trek enjoyable. However, this may not be the case for beginner trekkers.

As per the Himalayan standards, the Manaslu Circuit is not recommended to first-time trekkers, but we do have many successful stories that show first-time trekkers completing this trek. It all depends on your preparation, fitness, and mindset.

If you are ready to push yourself and determined to complete the Manaslu Circuit trek, who are we to say no to you? Instead, we will pair you with a strong, reliable trekking guide and porter to achieve your goal.

Below, you can read what you can expect during the Manaslu Circuit trek in terms of challenges:

The offbeat terrain: The first few days, you will be trekking on steep rocky paths. As you hike above Namrung village, the walkways get quite narrow and follow hillsides. The guide will help you cross these narrow sections. It is crucial that you listen to him and follow his instructions.

haring the trails with mules: You will encounter mules while trekking. They mostly transport goods between the villages. The pro tip is to stay still on the side of the hill and let the mules pass. Animals are unpredictable. To be on the safe side, we recommend that trekkers always stand on the wall side.

Suspension bridge: There are many long suspension bridges on the Manaslu Circuit route, and crossing them is quite thrilling. Suspension bridges swing a little when you walk on them, and they are high, which can be scary for some trekkers. Focus on the view and do not look down. Use the ropes while crossing the bridge. It will help you maintain balance.

Body balance and the right gear: Walking on rugged terrain can lead to missteps and getting hurt. So, you have to be careful with your foot placements. Make sure your front foot is stable before you move the back foot. Wear good trekking boots that will support your ankles. Use trekking poles. It will help you a lot while ascending and descending. Similarly, get a backpack that has waist straps. It will be easy on your back and shoulders.

Long trekking duration: You will walk a lot during the Manaslu Circuit trek. The first three days of the trek (up to Namrung) are the longest. You will be walking almost 16 to 20 km each day. Namrung onwards, you will hike 10 km on average each day. So, on average, you will hike 6 hours a day during the trek.

Your health condition: High-altitude remote trekking is not for everyone. If you have heart or lung issues, consulting a doctor before the trek is a must. We usually recommend trekkers to meet their doctors, get necessary vaccines, and talk about altitude sickness and any other health issues that may get triggered during the trip.

A long time in remote mountains: You will spend 12 days in the remote mountains of the Manaslu region on this trek. Spending that many days away from the modern conveniences and digital world is not a cup of tea for everyone. Trekkers have to be willing to embrace limited facilities, adjust to a simple mountain lifestyle, and enjoy nature.

Larkya La Pass: The Biggest Challenge of the Manaslu Circuit Trek

Larkya La Pass is one of the highest mountain passes in Nepal. It connects the Manaslu region with the Annapurna region. The Pass is situated 5,106 meters above sea level, and crossing it requires 8 to 9 hours of walking across varying terrain.

As much as crossing this pass is challenging, the view from the top is equally rewarding. You will see an excellent view of Samdo Peak, Naike Peak, Manaslu North, Larke Peak, Annapurna II, Himlung Himal, Kang Guru, and many others from the top of Larkya La Pass (5,106 metres / 16,752 feet).

From Larke Phedi, you will push towards the pass. The trail first descends through a steep moraine to a small lake. From here, you will follow a narrow, unclear path that crosses the south, steep, grassy slope.

Then you will hike to the edge of the moraine and descend to four frozen lakes. From here begins the uphill climb to the top of the Larkya La Pass. Enjoy the view and descend from the pass.

You will cross a steep, grassy moraine and reach a small meadow. From here, the trail continues to descend to Bimthan. The valley begins to widen as you descend from Larkya La to Bimthang.

You can cross Larkya La in winter as well. Depending on the pass condition, we may have to use microspikes. Our team will help you navigate the trail safely.

Side Trek with couple of additional day one can do during the Manaslu Circuit Trek

Tsum Valley Trek

Tsum Valley Trek lies in the lower part of the Manaslu Region and goes at the low altitude. This is one of the remote areas of the Manaslu Region with the Tibetan settlement. The trail to Tsum Valley follows the same route of the Manaslu Circuit Trek for couple of days and then divert towards the popular Tsum Valley.

Trekkers can enjoy the majestic landscape, solitude trail, monastery, cave and most famously the ancient Tsum valley and the Tibetan hospitality, tradition and culture and finally one can continue the trek towards Manaslu Circuit Trail.

Ganesh Himal Base Camp Trek

Ganesh Himal Base Camp, a popular off-the-beaten trail lies in the Manaslu Region of Nepal and follows the trail through the Tsum Valley. Trekkers here can explore the Ganesh Himal Base Camp with an option to combine with/without Tsum Valley and then continues towards the Manaslu Circuit Trail.

Annapurna Circuit Trek

Annapurna Circuit Trek, one of the most popular trekking trail in Nepal is co-joined with the Manaslu Region. Trekkers here will have an option to combine Manaslu Circuit Trek with Annapurna Circuit Trek with the same permits.

However, you will need to have couple of days extra to do Annapurna Circuit Trek after your trek of Manaslu Circuit Trek ends to Dharapani. The best part of this combo trek is that you will make another pass (Thorang La Pass 5416M) and then descend towards Muktinath to take a drive to Kathmandu or a flight to Katmandu via Pokhara.

Tilicho Lake Trek

Tilicho Lake Trek that falls in the Annapurna Region is another famous destination for trekkers and is one of the highest situated lake. Tilicho Lake (4919M) is famous for its stunning vista, blue lake surrounded by snow-covered Himalayas and the adventurous trail

Further, one will still have an option to join Annapurna Circuit Trek and descend to Muktinath via the Thorang La Pass (5416M) to make a Annapurna Circuit.

Extend the Manaslu Circuit trek to the hidden Tsum Valley

Tsum Valley is the extension of the Manaslu Circuit route. It is a hidden valley known as Beyul in Tibetan Buddhism. The Tsum Valley is even more pristine and beautiful than the Manaslu Circuit.

The trail to Tsum Valley separates from Lokpa village (on the way from Jagat to Deng). Some notable destinations in this valley are Mu Gompa, Ranchen Gompa, and Ganesh Himal Base Camp.

Your Manaslu Circuit trek itinerary will extend 5 to 7 days if you combine the Tsum Valley. If you are doing the Manaslu Circuit trek and have a few extra days, then we highly recommend extending your trek.

We also have a Manaslu Circuit trek with a Tsum Valley package that you can check out.

The Nubri community

The locals of the upper Manaslu Circuit are known as Nubri. Like Sherpas are the natives of the Everest region, Nubris are the natives of the upper Manaslu region. The Nubri valley begins from Ghap village.

They speak the Nubri language, which resulted in the name Nubri Valley and Nubri community. It is one of the undocumented languages that is still being studied.

Like language, the culture, traditions, and beliefs of the Nubri community are also different. Though we mostly talk about Manaslu Circuit's adventure, challenges, and views, the locals and their deeply rooted heritage also make this trek very special.

Why is the Manaslu Circuit a restricted area in Nepal?

The upper part of the Manaslu Circuit trek route is close to the Nepal-Tibet border. The Nepalese government has made it a restricted area for tourists to maintain border security.

Likewise, the upper part of the Manaslu region also has many exotic flora and fauna and ingenious tribes worth protecting and preserving.

Accommodation on the Manaslu Circuit trek

During the Manaslu Circuit trek, you will spend two nights in Kathmandu and the rest of the time in the mountains. In Kathmandu, you have the option to stay in a budget-friendly or a 5-star hotel.

Our Manaslu Circuit trek package includes a three-star or tourist standard hotel. You can definitely upgrade to a 5-star hotel if you wish. While trekking, the accommodation will be simple.

The Manaslu Circuit route has teahouse accommodation for the trekkers. Up to Samdo, you will find very comfortable teahouses. Clean rooms with twin beds are common. A single room costs additional money.

Washrooms can be private or shared, depending on the place. The services are also great up to Samdo. You will find a hot shower, laundry services, WiFi, and charging ports. Note that these services may cost you a few extra bucks.

The dining area is where you will have your meals and mingle with other trekkers and the locals. It is also the warmest place in the tea house because of the wooden heater burning most of the time.

After Samdo, especially in Larke Phedi (Dharmasala) and Bimthang, the accommodation options are very limited. These two places are not villages but just resting points. So, there are not many teahouses.

Trekkers even have to spend nights in a tent during peak seasons. Discover Altitude will do its best to get you a bed in the teahouses in these places. Make sure you carry a sleeping bag because the upper part of the trail is cold.

The temperature goes below -10°C even in the spring and autumn seasons. Another thing to note is that most of the teahouses have squat toilets on the Manaslu Circuit route. Western toilets are available in a handful of places.

Along the trail, there will be some stops where you can use the washroom, especially during lunch. In case nature calls and you can't hold it, bushes are the only option. Carry wet and dry tissues in your daypack. It will be very helpful.

Best Time to Do the Manaslu Circuit Trek

January to May (spring) and September to December (autumn) are the best times to trek the Manaslu Circuit. Among these months, April and October are the most optimal periods because of the finest weather and mild climate ideal for crossing Larkya La Pass.

Trekking between June and August and December and February is considered unfavorable because of weather challenges. For example, heavy rainfall makes the trail slippery and muddy, which makes it challenging to navigate.

Likewise, snowfall and cold weather between December and February may not be everyone's cup of tea. Larkya La Pass may even get closed if the snow on the pass is not passable.

For the best mountain views, excellent visibility, long daylight hours, and a comfortable trekking environment, we recommend doing the Manaslu Circuit trek in spring or autumn.

Food on the Manaslu Circuit Trek: What Will You Eat?

The food choices on the Manaslu Circuit trek are better than you may have expected. Our package covers only breakfasts in Kathmandu, but you will get three meals a day during the trek.

Your guide will take your breakfast order the night before, so that it is ready on time the next morning. For lunch and dinner, you can order it once you reach the destination. The breakfast menu is usually Tibetan bread, noodles, toast, etc.

Some places also have options like muesli, oats, and pancakes. Eggs are found almost everywhere. For lunch and dinner, you will have options such as the famous dal bhat, thukpa, thenduk, pasta, etc.

Many places also sell potato pizza, French fries, porridge, soups, etc. One thing that we highly recommend is to check the meat's freshness at a higher altitude before you have it to avoid potential indigestion.

Refrigeration is an issue at higher elevations, so it is best if you pre-check the meat quality or ask your guide's opinion. We personally recommend sticking to vegetarian food during the trek.

If you have any food allergies or dietary restrictions, make sure to inform your guide and be aware of what you eat. For drinks, you will get tea, coffee, hot chocolate, energy drinks, and local beer and wine.

Avoid alcoholic drinks until you cross Larkya La. Alcohol leads to dehydration, which will affect your acclimatization and increase the risk of altitude sickness.

Drinking ample water daily during the trek is necessary. Boiled water is available throughout the trek. Tap water is soft at high elevation. It is safe to drink, but you can use water purification tablets to double ensure its safety.

Altitude sickness on the Manaslu Route

Altitude sickness is one of the biggest challenges during trekking in the Himalayas. It can happen to anyone. Your prior experience, age, gender, hemoglobin level, genetic makeup, and pre-existing diseases make a huge difference in whether you will suffer from altitude sickness or not.

Altitude sickness is another reason that requires a doctor's opinion before the trek. When you suffer from altitude sickness, you will see symptoms like headache, nausea, lethargy, and vomiting.

You may not be able to sleep or lose your appetite. Likewise, difficulty in breathing is another huge sign of altitude sickness.

Therefore, it is important that you listen to your body as it experiences varying altitudes and climates. If you feel uneasy, share with your guide. He may give you Diamox, which is an altitude sickness medicine.

One thing to note is that you do not have any medicine without your guide's knowledge. Our guides are trained to provide care for altitude sickness, minor injuries, and health concerns during the trek.

Below, we have shared some tips that will help you avoid altitude sickness during the Manaslu Circuit trek:

  • Aclimatization days: Acclimatization days are basically rest days during which you will hike to a nearby high altitude and return to the same village to spend the night. This process helps in getting used to high elevation and avoiding altitude sickness. We have included two acclimatization days in our Manaslu Circuit trek itinerary, which is enough to cross Larkya La Pass without getting altitude sickness.
  • Maintain your pace: You do not want to go too fast or too slow. Maintain a uniform pace and enjoy the hike.
  • Hydration: Make sure to keep yourself hydrated. A dehydrated body is much more prone to altitude sickness. Carry a water bottle or a water bladder (highly recommended) and keep sipping water as you hike. Electrolytes are very good for the trek. It will give you an instant energy boost and also keep you hydrated.
  • Get ample rest and food: You have to be in good condition to walk 6 hours daily. Stretch before and after the trek. It will help you a lot with muscle pain. Rest and recover. You have to get ample sleep and eat enough food to keep yourself energized.

Travel insurance

Travel insurance is non-negotiable for the Manaslu Circuit trek, and it must cover emergency helicopter evacuation.

On treks like the Manaslu Circuit, if any unseen event arises or you get extremely sick, helicopter evacuation is the only way to provide immediate medical assistance or get you to the city.

Without airlift coverage, it will cost you a lot of money for the evacuation. On top of that, the rescue providers also hesitate to provide the service if the payment is not guaranteed.

So, we recommend trekkers to buy travel insurance with necessary coverage and bring the documents with them to Nepal.

Tips for the guide and porter

It is common to tip the guide and porter after the trek to say thank you for their hard work. Tips are not covered in our Manaslu Circuit trek package, so trekkers can tip as much as they wish.

There is no fixed amount for a tip. If you are trekking in a group, then every member can contribute a fixed amount and tip the guide and porter collectively. If you ask us what a nice tip is, we will say 15% to 25% of the package cost.

What is the weight limit for a porter?

One porter carries 18-20 kg. This weight limit is divided between two trekkers. So, each trekker has a 9-10 kg weight limit for a duffel bag. Discover Altitude will provide you with a duffel bag to use during the trek.

What are the Required Permits and their fees?

For the Manaslu Circuit trek, every foreigner needs the following permits:

Restricted Area Permit (RAP)

Although the Manaslu Circuit Trekking trail is a restricted area, the cost of the permit is cheaper compared to other restricted areas of Nepal. The Manaslu restricted area permit cost varies from season to season, as September-November is regarded as the best time for the Manaslu Circuit Trek.

Trekkers need to pay USD 100 per person to obtain a special permit. This permit lasts for a week (starting from the date we enter the restricted area). If you are to increase our number of days, we need to pay an extra USD 15 per person per day.

For the rest of the month of the year, you need to pay USD 70 to obtain a restricted permit for the Manaslu Circuit Trek; this also lasts for a week and can be extended upon paying an extra USD 10 per person per day.

Manaslu Conservation Area Project (MCAP) Permit

As Manaslu is a conservation area or protected region in Nepal, trekkers need conservation permits as well. Regardless of the month of the year or season or the number of days to spend, the Manaslu Conservation Area Project (MCAP) Permit is the same, and the fees are Rs 400 for SAARC nationals and Rs 3000 or USD 30 for other nationals.

Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) Permit

As the Manaslu Circuit Trekking trail leads you towards two popular conservation areas of Nepal i.e. Manaslu and Annapurna, trekkers need to obtain an ACAP permit as well. These ACAP entry permit fees are Rs 3000 or USD 30 to all foreign nationals, regardless of the number of days and time of the year.

Chumnubri Rural Municipality Permit

Maximum part of the Manaslu Area falls under Chumnubri Rural Municipality, a local government body. From September 6, 2024, this local body started to collect fees to enter this area and costs USD 10 or Rs 1000 Per Person.

Our Manaslu Circuit trek package includes all these permits and their fees. Manaslu RAP is the most expensive permit. Whereas, MCAP and ACAP permits are single-entry.

Nepal travel visa

Our Manaslu Circuit trek package does not include the Nepal travel visa. Trekkers have to get it by themselves. You can check the Nepal travel visa in detail on this site.

Basically, travelers from many countries can easily get a Nepal travel visa upon landing at Kathmandu Airport. Just make sure you have the required documents and visa fee ready for a quick process.

Travelers from a few countries are not eligible for an on-arrival travel visa in Nepal, so they have to go through proper channels, such as the Nepalese Embassy or Consulate Office in their country.
